Brisbane is blessed with an abundance of fantastic pop bands, and We All Want To are one of them. Despite not quite breaking into the nation’s pop consciousness, they easily could. The Haze, their third album, further strengthens that case. In fact, if WAWT were based in North America, it’s easy to imagine these songs finding a much bigger audience.
While We All Want To began as a vehicle for Tim Steward’s songwriting—already well established through '90s legends Screamfeeder—it has evolved into a fully invested band. The Haze continues that story in fine fashion. It’s perhaps a long bow, but there are echoes of Canadian supergroup The New Pornographers: unabashed pop songs, sweet rock-out moments, lush textures, and a sound that doesn’t quite feel American. The band also boasts at least two excellent songwriters in Steward and Staniford.
As for the unabashed pop songs, there are plenty here. "Road to Ruin" will have fans of anthemic pop hitting replay, while "Everybody’s Damaged" combines sweet guitar tones and melodic interplay that quickly become earworms. "The Deep End" taps into the dreamy songwriting Steward has returned to time and again, with touchstones like Swervedriver. You wouldn’t blame someone for asking if he keeps a dream diary—many of these songs seem to emerge from that glorious state of mind.
