Stars Shift Over Time is the debut EP from The Off Set, an indie rock band from Perth in Western Australia.
The band formed in late 2024 as something of a local indie rock supergroup, featuring three singer-songwriters – Barry Divola (Radio Radio, ex-Min Min Lights), Zack Yusof Young (Mystery Tapes, ex-Min Min Lights) and Dave Wallace (The City Views). Joined by drummer Ben Thornley, they named themselves The Off Set because they all play offset guitars.
Their shows soon gained a reputation for big hooks, soaring harmonies and witty stage banter, along with the fact that Barry, Zack and Dave share lead vocal duties and often swap instruments mid-set.
They’ve drawn comparisons to Teenage Fanclub, The Lemonheads, Sloan, Guided By Voices, Super Furry Animals and Matthew Sweet.
The EP kicks off with the band’s first single, The Places She Only Wished That She Could Go, written by Barry. It was inspired by a photo essay in an old magazine about the lost youth of Japan in the lead-up to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The song is accompanied by an evocative ’60s-infused video directed by award-winning playwright and short-film maker Frank Leggett.
Pretty One is a slow burner from Zack, and the title comes from the fact that before he had lyrics for the song, the band would just refer to this lovely tune as “the pretty one”. Barry switches from guitar to bass here and indulges his love of both Paul McCartney and Air, while Dave channels his inner Dave Gilmour on a stunning solo.
From Dusk Till Dawn is a Dave song, a rousing and irresistibly catchy slice of jangly indie rock that compares a couple who just can’t seem to get it together to the sun and the moon being unable to inhabit the sky at the same time.
The EP was recorded and mixed by Dave at his Colourbond Studio in Mundaring, in the Perth Hills.
