Chris Isaak heads south on Baja Sessions: a beach-worn detour from the California crooner released between Forever Blue and Speak of the Devil. Out goes the polished rock & roll, in come acoustic, sandy-footed arrangements and a few old favourites recast with the top down. The A-side reaches first for Roy Orbison's 'Only The Lonely', and it's delivered with all the tenderness that made the original endure. Then, 'South Of The Border (Down Mexico Way)', settles into the easy-going sway of warm guitars and desert dusk. Flip it over and 'Yellow Bird' and 'Sweet Leilani' let the Hawaiian influence take the wheel. The mood even spilled over into a 58-minute companion documentary, with Isaak performing and generally larking about between the takes.
