Although Stranger In The Alps was the record that introduced us to Phoebe’s tender yet powerful indie rock stylings, Punisher solidifies her position as one of the current generation’s finest songwriters. Taking influence from Elliott Smith and Bright Eyes, Punisher weaves heart wrenching narratives that gain more power in the quiet yet effective nuances. The muted and underwater sounding guitars on ‘Garden Song’ detailing her nightmares she has on tour, the addition of triumphant horns on the guitar-driven ‘Kyoto’ and the searing detail and vivid imagery on the best song here ‘Saviour Complex’, before the blazing closer ‘I Know The End’ that is equally as strong. All the tracks here sum up an absolute force in this genre and whatever she does next will be very highly anticipated.
